Venting Practices
This chapter delves into the dynamics of spatial design practitioners within the built environment and their efforts in addressing spatial inequality. It is based on recorded conversations titled ‘Gripe Sessions’ held during the 2020 Covid19 Lockdown among three South African socio-technical spatial design practitioners. These sessions served as a means of peer-led support, reflection, and knowledge sharing. The co-authors aim to shed light on interpersonal dynamics present in socially engaged built environment work at the grass-roots neighborhood scale in the contemporary neo-apartheid city condition. Drawing from Feminist scholarly principles, the chapter offers a ‘partial perspective’ to the topic, using qualitative social studies techniques to introduce and ground concerns identified by the co-authors within the discourse around city-making practice and spatial justice in South Africa’s built environment.
