Kunle Adeyemi’s studio on Water Urbanism in Africa took place in Durban in 2017. 1to1 was
requested to support in the socio-spatial learning process between the Kunle’s Harvard Students and various local organisations, academic institutions and most importantly the students of Architecture at UKZN and DUT.
The studio focused on local industries in Durban as a source of agency to support a design research inquiry and over the week we visited the Markets of Warwick with Asiye eTafuleni, the Durban Port Authority, Kwa-Mashu with Street Scene Tours, Durban City Centre with Beset and the City of Durban’s Architecture Department with Nina Saunders.
The week proved to be an inspiring look into the water urbanism and industrious nature of Durban as a logistical and cultural HUB with Mpho Matsipha and Sumayya Valley visiting the studio on the final day of presentations from the Harvard Students.
